Jeonghakdang, meaning “Hall of Proper Studies,” is the educational space of Geumoseowon Confucian Academy. It was constructed when the academy was rebuilt in 1602 during the Joseon period (1392-1910).
The building consists of a wide wooden-floored hall in the center, an underfloor-heated room to each side, and a wooden-floored veranda along the front. It retains mid-Joseon-period architectural features, such as the tall pillars of the wooden-floored hall and the window frames with central vertical posts. The structure of the roof, as well as the brackets that support it, demonstrate the beauty of moderation and form. The wooden veranda is both practical and beautifully made.
Overall, the building is typical of Confucian academy lecture halls built in the late Joseon period. It is also of great architectural value as it preserves the unique characteristics of the Gyeongsangbuk-do region.
