Sanghyeonmyo, meaning “Shrine of Esteemed Sages,” is the veneration space of Geumoseowon Confucian Academy. It was constructed when the academy was rebuilt in 1602 during the Joseon period (1392-1910). The shrine holds the spirit tablets of Gil Jae (1353-1419), Kim Jong-jik (1431-1492), Jeong Bung (1467-1512), Bak Yeong (1471-1540), and Jang Hyeon-gwang (1554-1637).
This building is one of the earliest Confucian shrines to lack a narrow wooden veranda along its facade. The wing-shaped wooden brackets installed atop the pillars are also characteristic of 17th-century architecture.
