Treasure · Unified Silla period · Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do
This statue is presumed to have been made in the 8th or 9th century during the Unified Silla period (668-935). It is located on a rocky cliff, about 500m to the west of Gwallyongsa Temple.
The Buddha has curly hair and a large protuberance on the top of the head, which is a symbol of the Buddha’s wisdom. His face is broad and square, and the three creases encircling his neck represent the “three destinies” of afflictions, actions, and suffering. The Buddha is seated on a pedestal decorated with lotus designs. There was once a halo behind the Buddha, but it is missing.
The statue was repaired in 1973. It measures about 3m in height.
