Treasure · Goryeo period · Hamyang-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do
This image of a standing buddha, carved in relief on the face of a large granite outcrop in Deokjeon-ri, is presumed to date to the 10th century during the Goryeo period (918-1392).
The buddha measures 5.8 m in height and stands atop a pedestal measuring 66 cm in height. The halo depicted around the buddha represents an auspicious light radiating from his body. The buddha’s broad round face, wide eyes, large nose, and closed lips give the buddha a powerful appearance, while his subtle smile conveys a sense of benevolence. His hands are disproportionately small compared to his wide feet, and the folds of his robes are expressed with thick and heavy lines.
