Treasure · Goryeo period · Miryang-si, Gyeongsangnam-do
A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. Although not all pagodas contain the true remains, they are nonetheless worshiped as sacred places that enshrine the Buddha.
This three-story stone pagoda is presumed to have been built in the middle period of the Goryeo dynasty (918-1392). It is located at what is known to be the former site of Sungjinsa Temple.
The pagoda is composed of a single-tiered base and three sets of body and roof stones. It is missing its decorative top. The body and roof stones become progressively smaller from bottom to top. The second-story roof and third-story body are made from one piece of stone, which is unusual. Inside the third-story body stone is a chamber designed to contain the relics of the Buddha.
The pagoda measures 3.2 m in height.
