Treasure · Goryeo period · Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do
This alms bowl pagoda, modeled on an alms bowl, a symbol of a master's transmission of the Truth to his disciples, is called a Bongbaltap (Pagoda Dedicated to Alms Bowl), and represents the Shakyamuni Buddha's passing on of his alms bowl to the Maitreya Buddha. The location of the pagoda in front of Yonghwajeon Hall, dedicated to Maitreya Buddha, also symbolizes that the Maitreya Buddha is the Buddha of the Future who will save all sentient beings following Shakyamuni Buddha.
The pagoda's pedestal is composed of Four parts, the lower pedestal, the stem, and the upper pedestal and the monk's bowl, Balwoo-shaped sculpture. The shape of the stem and its decorative lotus motif suggest that the pagoda was built during the Goryeo period.
