Treasure · Goryeo period · Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do
This statue is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period (918-1392). It was allegedly modeled on the Stone Seated Buddha at Yongseondae Cliff (Treasure), which is about 500 m to the west of Gwallyongsa Temple.
The statue depicts Bhaisajyaguru, or the Medicine Buddha, who is believed to possess the power to heal illness and physical defects. It is presumed that this Buddha originally had a medicine bowl in his left hand, but it is missing.
On the middle part of the pedestal, there is an inscription stating that a statue of Maitreya Buddha was made in 772, suggesting that the current statue and pedestal were not an original set and that the pedestal outdates the statue.
