Treasure · Unified Silla period · Changnyeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do
A pagoda is a symbolic monument enshrining the relics or remains of the Buddha. In many cases, a pagoda does not contain the actual remains, but is still regarded as a sacred place enshrining the Buddha.
This three-story stone pagoda is presumed to have been built in the Unified Silla period (668-935). It is unknown to which temple this pagoda belonged.
The pagoda is composed of a two-tiered base, three sets of body and roof stones, and a decorative top. The corners of the body stones are carved to look like pillars. The carving of a door on the base is presumed to have been added at a later time.
In 2009, a gilt-bronze wind bell was excavated near the pagoda, and it is presumed this wind bell was once used to decorate this pagoda.
