Hanging banner paintings were displayed outdoors on special occasions such as the Buddha’s birthday, outdoor rites, and the funerals of eminent monks.
This painting of the Buddha was painted in 1684 and was repaired in 1729. The Buddha is holding a lotus branch in his hands and wearing a splendid jewelled crown and a robe decorated with flower patterns. The background is filled with peonies in various colors. A prayer for the wellbeing of the king, queen, and crown prince is written between the Buddha’s feet, which is uncommon for hanging banner paintings.
