Treasure · Joseon period · Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do
Originally built as the central dharma hall of the Harojeon section of Tongdosa Temple, the current Yeongsanjeon Hall was built in 1704 when the temple was headed by Great Priest Songgok. According to the “Records on the Renovation and Ornamental Painting of Yeongsanjeon Hall and Cheonwangmun Gate” (Yeongsanjeon Cheonwangmun Yangjungchanggyeom Danhwak Gimun), two of the temple’s main structures, Yeongsanjeon Hall and Cheonwangmun Gate, were destroyed by fire in the spring of 1713, and were rebuilt the following year thanks to the devoted efforts of several great Seon masters including Cheongin, Jeongan, Nangil and Chiwon. The new buildings were decorated with dancheong (a traditional style of ornamental painting) in 1715 under the supervision of Great Priest Chongan, and the entire renovation work was completed in 1716. Yeongsanjeon Hall is also famous for its mural painting (Treasure) and the beautiful dancheong patterns adorning the ceiling and cross beams.
