Daegwangmyeongjeon Hall is the central dharma hall of the Jungnojeon section of Tongdosa Temple. It is dedicated to Vairocana Buddha, the principal Buddha of the Avatamsaka Sutra. The name Vairocana means to “spread the light of universal truth far and wide.”
According to A Brief History of Tongdosa Temple (Tongdosa Yakji), the shrine to Vairocana was originally built when the monastery of Tongdosa was established, although the inscription on the plaque commemorating the renovation of the hall records that the original shrine was destroyed by fire in the tenth month of 1756, and that the new building was completed in the ninth month of 1758. Daegwangmyeongjeon Hall contains a mantra invoking the Buddha’s help in preserving the building against the fires of evil.
