Myeongnyundang, meaning “Hall of Illuminated Human Relations,” is the lecture hall of a local Confucian school. Local Confucian schools, called hyanggyo in Korean, were established across the country to promote Confucian education and veneration. It is unknown exactly when Miryanghyanggyo Local Confucian School was first established, but the complex was destroyed during the Japanese invasions of 1592-1598 and rebuilt shortly thereafter.
Myeongnyundang Hall of Miryanghyanggyo Local Confucian School was built in 1618. The building has a gable roof and stands atop a platform made of unhewn stone. It features the typical layout for large lecture halls, which consists of a spacious wooden-floored hall in the center and underfloor-heated rooms to each side. Despite having undergone several repairs, this building ranks among the well-preserved local Confucian school structures of the Gyeongsangnam-do region and provides important insights into the architectural characteristics of lecture halls built in the middle period of the Joseon dynasty (1392-1910).
