Treasure · Joseon period · Sejong
Geungnakbojeon is a Buddhist worship hall for the veneration of Amitabha Buddha, who is believed to guide the dead to be reborn in the Buddhist paradise of the West. It is the main worship hall of Biamsa Temple.
Though its period of construction is uncertain, the building’s architectural characteristics suggest that it dates to the mid-17th century during the Joseon period (1392-1910). Its size is relatively smaller than the typical Buddhist worship hall, which is thought to reflect limited economic conditions in the aftermath of several foreign invasions in the late 16th and early 17th centuries. The large hip-and-gable roof is supported by many interlocking brackets, which are placed atop not only the pillars but the lintels, as well. Enshrined inside the hall is a large statue of Amitabha, above which hangs an ornate wooden canopy.
As this building has preserved the traditional characteristics and local character of regional Buddhist temples from the mid-17th century, it was designated as a Treasure in 2021.
